Sixteen words, four hidden groups of four. Work out what each set of words has in common, and sort them out. Some groups are easy to spot. Some are sneaky.

There are 120 puzzles to play, from gentle to tricky, and a new Daily puzzle every day.

How to play

  1. Open the game and tap Play, or choose the Daily puzzle or All puzzles.
  2. Tap four words you think belong together, then tap Submit.
  3. If you are right, the group turns into a coloured band with its theme. If three of the four fit, you see One away.
  4. A wrong guess costs a mistake. Four mistakes ends the puzzle, and every group is revealed.
  5. Tap Shuffle to mix up the words, and Clear to drop your picks. Guess the same four again and it costs nothing.
  6. The bands show how hard a group is: mint is Easy, apricot is Medium, rose is Hard and slate is Tricky.

Is Word Groups free, and do I need to download anything?

Yes, it is free. Word Groups plays right in your web browser with no download, no sign-up and no ads on the site. Just open the page and start.

Can I play on my phone or tablet?

Yes. Tap the words to pick them, then tap Submit. On a computer, use the mouse, or the arrow keys with Space to pick and Enter to submit.

How many puzzles are there?

There are 120. They go from Easy to Medium to Tricky, with the easiest first. There is also a Daily puzzle, and a streak to keep.

What does One away mean?

It means three of the four words you picked belong to the same group. Swap one and try again.
