War is one of the simplest card games there is. You and Bear each flip a card, and the higher card wins both. When the two cards match, it is war: three cards go down, one goes up, and the higher card takes them all.

Games are short, so a round ends in a few minutes. Play by tapping, or turn on Auto play and just watch. There is also a Pick 1 of 3 mode if you want a little choice.

How to play

  1. Open the game. Choose a level and a mode: Flip, the classic, or Pick 1 of 3.
  2. In Flip, tap your deck or the table, or press Space, to flip your top card. Bear flips one too.
  3. The higher card wins both cards. Aces are high.
  4. A tie is a war. Three cards go down and one goes up. The higher card takes them all, and a tie can start another war.
  5. In Pick 1 of 3, Bear shows a card first. You choose which of your top three cards to play, with a tap or the keys 1, 2 and 3.
  6. The goal depends on the level: first to 5 tricks on Easy, first to 7 on Fair, first to 10 on Hard, and on Tough the most cards after 20 flips. Auto play flips for you, and Slow, Normal or Fast sets the speed.

Is the War card game free, and do I need to download anything?

Yes, it is free. War plays right in your web browser with no download, no sign-up and no ads on the site. Just open the page and start.

Can I play on my phone or tablet?

Yes. Tap your deck or the table to flip. In Pick 1 of 3, tap one of your three cards. On a computer, use the mouse, or press Space to flip and 1, 2 or 3 to pick.

Is there any skill in War?

In Flip mode it is a game of luck, and that is part of the fun. Pick 1 of 3 adds choices: you see Bear's card first, then decide which of your top three to play.

Can I lose?

Yes, but gently. If Bear reaches the goal first, or has more cards at the end on Tough, the game ends and you can play again right away.
