Everyone knows tic-tac-toe, and it is still a fun little duel. Take turns marking squares, and get your line before the other side does.

There are three boards to try: the classic 3x3, a bigger 4x4 where you need four in a row, and Ultimate, with nine small boards in one big one. Play the computer, or share one screen with a friend.

How to play

  1. Open the game, pick a board (3x3, 4x4 or Ultimate), then choose Easy, Normal, Hard or 2 Players.
  2. You are X and you go first. Tap a square to place your mark. The computer plays O.
  3. Get three in a row on 3x3, or four in a row on 4x4: across, up and down, or corner to corner.
  4. Ultimate has nine small boards. The square you pick sends the other player to that board. Win a small board to claim it, and claim three in a row to win.
  5. If you are sent to a board that is already closed, you can play anywhere. If the board fills up with no line, it is a draw.
  6. On a keyboard, use the arrow keys with Enter or Space, or keys 1 to 9 on 3x3. Tap Undo, or press U, to take a move back.

Is Tic-Tac-Toe free, and do I need to download anything?

Yes, it is free. Tic-Tac-Toe plays right in your web browser with no download, no sign-up and no ads on the site. Just open the page and start.

Can I play on my phone or tablet?

Yes. Tap a square to place your mark. On a computer, use the mouse, or the arrow keys with Enter or Space.

Can I play with a friend?

Yes. Choose 2 Players and take turns on one screen, X against O.

Can I beat the computer on Hard?

On 3x3, Hard plays a perfect game and never loses, so the best you can do is a draw. Easy is a gentle place to start, and a beginner can win there.
