Shut the Box is a quiet game of adding up. Nine tiles are numbered 1 to 9. Roll the dice, then shut the tiles that add up to your roll.

You keep going until no open tiles can make your roll. Then the open tiles are your score, and a low score wins. Shut all nine for a perfect 0. There are eight levels, each with an aim to beat.

How to play

  1. Open the game and pick a level. Level 1 is a good place to start.
  2. Tap Roll to throw two dice.
  3. Tap open tiles that add up to the roll. A 7 can be the 7 tile, or 3 and 4, or 1, 2 and 4. The tiles shut as soon as your pick makes the roll.
  4. Roll again and keep shutting tiles. Once 7, 8 and 9 are shut, you roll just one die.
  5. When no open tiles make the roll, the round ends. Add up the open tiles for your score. Beat the aim for the level to open the next one.
  6. Tapped the wrong tile? Tap Undo, or press Z. Stuck? Tap Hint, or press H, on levels 1 to 4. On a keyboard, press Space to roll and 1 to 9 to pick tiles.

Is Shut the Box free, and do I need to download anything?

Yes, it is free. Shut the Box plays right in your web browser with no download, no sign-up and no ads on the site. Just open the page and start.

Can I play on my phone or tablet?

Yes. Tap Roll, then tap the tiles. On a computer, use the mouse, or the keys: Space or R rolls and 1 to 9 pick tiles.

How do I win?

Get a lower score than the aim for the level. The aims go 30, 22, 16, 12, 9, 6 and 3, and the last level asks you to shut every tile. A win opens the next level.

Can I take a move back?

Yes. Tap Undo, or press Z, to take back your last pick or shut tile. The dice stay the same, so you cannot roll again.
