Questions
How much should I tip?
In the US, 15 to 20% is usual at a sit-down restaurant, and many people give 18 to 20% for good service. It is your call: this calculator only does the arithmetic, it is not financial advice.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Many people tip on the amount before tax. To do that, type the pre-tax amount as the bill.
Why does everyone pay a cent or two more than the total?
When a bill does not split evenly, each share is rounded up to the next cent so nobody comes up short. The extra cents show under Everyone pays.
What do the whole-dollar buttons do?
Whole $ each rounds every share up to a whole dollar, handy for cash. Whole $ total rounds the total up first, then splits it. Either way the extra goes to the tip, and the real tip is shown.
