Scaled recipe

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 1/4 cups milk
  • 4 1/2 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Butter for the pan

Amounts are rounded to the nearest kitchen fraction. Cups, spoons, grams, ounces and pounds it knows; any other word after a number (eggs, cloves, cans) is kept as it is, and lines without a number at the start are left alone.

Recipe scaler

Paste or type the ingredients, one a line, then say how many the recipe makes and how many you want, or scale it by a factor. Each amount is scaled and written as a kitchen fraction you can measure.

Questions

How do I scale a recipe?

Divide the servings you want by the servings it makes, and multiply every amount by that. From 4 to 6 is 6 ÷ 4 = 1 1/2, so 2 cups of flour becomes 3 cups.

Which lines does it change?

Lines that start with an amount, like 1 1/2 cups flour, 2-3 cloves garlic or ½ tsp salt. Lines without a number at the start, like Salt to taste, and numbered steps are left exactly as they are.

What does it do with the units?

Cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, grams, ounces, pounds, ml and liters it knows: these come out as kitchen fractions, and spoonfuls are tidied where it is clean, so 3 tsp becomes 1 tbsp and 12 tbsp becomes 3/4 cup. Any other word, like eggs or cans, is kept as written.

Is my recipe sent anywhere?

No. It stays in this browser on this device. If you tap Share, the link carries your recipe text, and the message says so.

Can I scale baking recipes?

Yes, but baking times and pan sizes do not scale the same way, and odd amounts like 1 1/2 eggs need a judgment call. Weighing helps.
