Questions
How are words counted?
A word is anything between spaces that has a letter or a number in it. Hyphenated words like well-known, contractions like don't, and numbers like 3.14 or 1,000 count as one word each. A dash or an & on its own is not a word.
How are Chinese and Japanese counted?
They are written without spaces, so each character counts as one word, the way word processors count them. The counter says so when your text has them. Korean is written with spaces and counts by them.
Do emoji count?
Each emoji counts as one character, even one with a skin tone or a family of several people, and so does each flag. Emoji on their own are not counted as words.
How is reading time worked out?
Words divided by 238 words a minute, a usual pace for an adult reading silently. Speaking time uses 140 words a minute, a calm pace for a talk. Both are rough guides.
Is my text kept private?
Your text stays in this browser on this device. It goes into a link only if you tap Share, and then the message says so. Clear removes it from the page and the device.
