The real cost of iPhone cleaner apps

Handeware · updated 22 August 2026

The best-selling apps in this category bill weekly, and weekly pricing is designed to be hard to add up in your head. So I sat down and added it up.

The arithmetic

Weekly is the standard in photo cleaners, chosen precisely because £5.99 reads as small.

BilledLooks likePer yearOver three years
$5.99 weeklya coffee$311$933
$7.99 monthlya streaming service$96$288
$39.95 yearlya real purchase$40$120
$19.99 oncea real purchase$20

A weekly cleaner costs more per year than most people spend on their actual phone plan, for a tool they open twice.

Why weekly exists

Two reasons, and neither one is about the product.

Small numbers convert. A three-day trial into $5.99 weekly converts several times better than the same product at $60 a year, even though the weekly is five times the price. Nobody multiplies at the moment of purchase — I certainly don’t.

And it survives forgetting. Cleaning a phone is an occasional job, so the honest pricing is a purchase, not a subscription. Weekly billing turns an occasional job into a permanent charge, and it works by counting on you not noticing.

Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions. Everything active is listed there with its renewal. Most people find at least one thing they had genuinely forgotten, and the weekly ones are the most commonly forgotten, because they never produce a charge big enough to notice.

Cancelling still leaves access until the period ends, so there is no reason to wait.

What a cleaner should reasonably cost

It runs locally, uses no servers and has no per-user cost. Once it’s built, an extra customer costs the developer nothing. That’s a one-time purchase, or a modest annual fee. It is not $311 a year.

When you compare, ignore the headline price and work out the annual cost. It is the only number that means anything, and it is the one the pricing is designed to obscure.
