How to Choose a Backgammon Set

Backgammon sets range from a small folding travel case to a heavy board that lives on a coffee table. They all play the same game. What changes is the size, the feel and the sound of the dice. Here is what to check.
What a complete set includes
A full set has a board with 24 points (the long triangles), 30 checkers (15 for each player), two pairs of dice, two dice cups and a doubling cube. If any of these are missing from the listing, ask. Used sets in particular can be missing a checker or the cube.
Search backgammon sets and check the photo for all the pieces laid out.
Travel or full size
| Size | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Travel | Trips, small tables, a first set | Small checkers and dice; harder for tired eyes. |
| Medium | Most homes | A middle ground for size and weight. |
| Large or tournament | Regular players, a showpiece | Heavy, needs a big table. |
Sizes are usually given in inches. Check whether the number is the closed case or the open board, since an open board is about twice as wide. A travel backgammon set is a cheap way to learn. If you already love the game, a bigger board is easier on the eyes.
The playing surface
Felt, cork and baize surfaces are quieter. Dice land softly and bounce less. Hard wood or vinyl surfaces are louder and the dice bounce more. If you play late at night, or in a small apartment, a soft surface is nicer for everyone.
The case can be vinyl, leatherette, real leather or wood. A leather backgammon board lasts and wears in with use. Vinyl wipes clean and costs less.
Checkers, dice and cups
- Checkers should fit the points with a little room, and stack neatly. Thick checkers are easier to pick up.
- Dice should be easy to read. Big, clear pips help anyone with tired eyes.
- Dice cups. Some have a lip inside so the dice tumble instead of sliding out. Felt-lined cups are quieter.
Lost a piece? You can buy dice cups and replacement checkers on their own.
What to skip
- Sets that do not list what is included. Ask before buying.
- Decor boards that look great but have a slick, noisy surface.
- Tiny travel sets as the only set for someone with tired eyes.

Questions
How many checkers come in a backgammon set?
30 in total: 15 for each player.
What is the doubling cube for?
It raises the stakes of a game. Many casual players leave it out, but a complete set includes one.
Is a travel backgammon set good for beginners?
Yes, it is a low-cost way to learn. The smaller pieces can be harder to see, so if you play often, a bigger board is easier on the eyes.
